The Chase

The Chase is a songwriting team from London, Canada founded by Adam Fearnall and Tom McIntosh.

"August 3rd" (Session #1)

The Songwriting Sessions give you a look inside of our songwriting process. These are the demos that we create in The Chase Song Shop. Each time that we get together, we leave with a snippet of verse, chorus, or bridge. As a songwriting team, we aspire to work with people to develop creative processes that help them to feel alive, this is a look inside our process.

This first track is about as rough a cut as you can get. Tom and I put this little idea down after listening to two of the many voice notes that I have saved on my computer. Each of note has a little piano part, a little melody, and some mumbled words. Where we ended up sounds nothing like the two clips that we were working off of.

A demo track from a recent session. Really rough. Let's see where it goes.

We weren’t sure if we were going to get much of anything out of this session together, but just before we left, Tom jumped in with a melody. You can hear him working to find it in the first half of the clip and then he commits to something in the second half, when I join in with the piano. This is a cool clip because usually I’m the one fiddling around with the melody and making weird mumbling noises to help me find it. It’s only fitting that I put Tom on display in this first Songwriting Sessions post.

I’m feeling like there could be a really cool piano part in here, but aside from that I’m not entirely sure where we’re headed. The one thing that we both like is that this doesn’t feel super slow. Sometimes we get into a bit of a rut and only end up with mid-tempo ballads. We’ll see where this ends up, but it doesn’t feel like it needs to drop into first dance territory.

What do you think? Where should we take this? Anyone want to join in and work on it?
