Abandoned Storefront
There could be a song in the phrase “abandoned storefront” but for now it’s the term that comes to mind as I browse through the pages of this website. There’s a layer of dust on each post, but everything is still here, as it was when I visited more regularly. I feel a swirl of energy as I browse through the pages, memories and ideas kicking up as I click through each one. There’s something here, but maybe it doesn’t need a storefront anymore, maybe it’s physical location could change?
Tom and I aren’t writing songs together at the moment, but we’re in each others’ lives, as always.
We live in different cities — Tom is in London and I’m in Fredericton. Tom is married and has two little girls. I live with my partner and a three-year-old golden doodle named Ralph. Music is always part of our conversations. There’s a bit of a pattern: check in about life and then, as the conversation is near the later stages, note that “we’re in a bit of a music rut” and try to jolt each other out by naming the songs that we’ve enjoyed recently.
As far as our own music goes, Tom’s most regular collaborator these days is his wife, Abbey. The two of them have played at a good few weddings over the last number of years; often with Tom at the piano as much as on the guitar. I had a period of renewed songwriting, inspired by the Toronto Songwriting School, from about 2020-2023. I worked on a bunch of pop songs and even began work on a musical. Here is a link to some of the demos that were created during that time. I haven’t written much songwriting done in the last year, thanks to a foray into ultramarathon running (that takes up quite a bit of time and energy), but I’ve been slowly making my way back to the piano over the last few weeks.
It’s possible (likely?) that we’ll write more songs together, but for now this seems like a place to come for memories of another time. The door isn’t locked, so feel free to come in, browse around and if you want to know anything about what you find, let one of us know.
